Staring Down the Last 25% of a Big Goal
I’m in the final stretch of my novel.
Just the first draft, technically. But it feels like more than that because I’ve restarted it several times, revised whole sections along the way, and carried the weight of this story for years. Now, with the finish line finally in view, I’m starting to feel a mix of excitement and resistance.
You’d think it would be all momentum and creative fire, right?
But here’s what’s also showing up:
Project fatigue.
Impatience.
A little voice saying, “Just get it done already.”
Overthinking when I know I should trust the process.
This is such a fascinating point in any long-term effort—the last 25%. When you’re closer to the end than the beginning, but not quite there yet.
Whether it's a creative project, a career pivot, or a long-term wellness goal, this final stretch tends to bring up its own challenges. There’s often a mix of pride in how far you’ve come… and a kind of emotional erosion from how long it’s taken.
Lately, I’ve been zooming out a bit to stay connected to the why behind my novel. I’ve been diving deeper into research, following neuroscientists, listening to audiobooks about related topics, and connecting with potential beta readers. It’s been energizing to imagine an actual person other than me (and my dear, patient husband) reading my story. That vision is helping me stay steady through this final leg.
And I wonder: What’s your “novel”? What’s the long-game goal you’ve poured time, effort, and care into, maybe even over years?
If you’re somewhere in that last 25%, here are a few gentle ways to re-engage:
Zoom out: Reconnect with the bigger picture. Why did you start? Who might benefit from the outcome?
Zoom in: What’s one small detail you could savor instead of rushing?
Call in some company: Whether it's beta readers or a support system, sometimes inviting others into the process can bring a fresh wave of motivation.
Most importantly, notice what you’re already doing well. Honor the energy you’ve carried this far. And if it feels right, ask: What else could I lean into to finish strong?
I’ll be finishing this draft in the next few weeks. If you’re working through your own homestretch, I’d love to walk beside you. Send me an email at aleisha [at] connectiontowellness.com and I’ll cheer you on!
