The B-R-A-I-N Method Uses Inner Wisdom for Decision-Making
We all face moments when life presents us with choices that feel overwhelming. I’ve certainly had my share. Whether it's a career shift, a health decision, or a relationship crossroads, the weight of "getting it right" can leave us feeling stuck and uncertain. I can recall times in my life when I felt almost paralyzed in the decision-making process, especially in my twenties, when the world seemed so huge and unknown and overwhelming.
But here's what I've learned from several decades of life and from working with incredible clients just like you: you already possess everything you need to make decisions that align with your authentic self and your values. Sometimes it’s just a matter of finding the right method to help sort it all out.
Today, I want to share a tool that honors your analytical mind and your innate wisdom—the B-R-A-I-N method. This framework doesn't tell you what to choose; instead, it creates space for your inner knowing to emerge while ensuring you've thoughtfully considered all angles.
What is the B-R-A-I-N Method?
Think of B-R-A-I-N as a gentle guide that helps you tap into the vast intelligence you carry within you. Each letter represents a question that invites you to explore a different aspect of your decision:
B - Benefits: What are the potential upsides of this choice?
R - Risks: What risks or challenges might arise?
A - Alternatives: Are there other options worth considering?
I - Intuition: What does your inner wisdom tell you?
N - Nothing: What happens if you take no action right now?
Why This Method Honors Your Inherent Wisdom
What I love most about the B-R-A-I-N approach is that it recognizes you as the expert on your own life. Rather than seeking external validation or following someone else's blueprint, this method creates a structured way for you to access the profound wisdom that lives within you.
It’s perfectly fine and often beneficial to discuss significant decisions with trusted individuals in your life. But at the end of the day, it’s you who has to feel good about your choice.
Each question in the B-R-A-I-N method builds your capacity to trust yourself more deeply. As you practice moving through these five parts, you strengthen your decision-making muscles and develop greater confidence in your ability to navigate life's complexities with grace.
Walking Through B-R-A-I-N: A Practical Example
Let's say you're considering whether to start your own business. Here's how you might work through each element:
Benefits: You explore the potential for creative fulfillment, financial freedom, a flexible schedule, and the joy of building something meaningful. You notice how your energy shifts as you imagine these possibilities.
Risks: You honestly assess financial uncertainty, increased responsibility, potential stress, and the learning curve ahead. Acknowledging these helps you examine the decision with clear eyes.
Alternatives: Perhaps you consider starting as a side venture, partnering with someone, freelancing first, or finding a more entrepreneurial role within your current company.
Intuition: You pause, breathe deeply, and tune into what your body and heart are telling you. Does the idea of entrepreneurship make you feel expansive and alive, or contracted and anxious? Both responses offer valuable information.
Nothing: You imagine your life in six months or two years if you don't pursue this path. Sometimes the "cost" of inaction provides the clarity you need to move forward. Or maybe you see that you need more time to do research and set aside extra cash before making the leap.
Building Your Decision-Making Superpowers
The beautiful thing about using B-R-A-I-N regularly is that it builds our "decision-making superpowers." Each time we work through this process, we develop:
Self-awareness about what truly matters to us
Confidence in our ability to handle whatever comes
Trust in our inner guidance system
Resilience to adapt when circumstances change
Clarity about our values and priorities
There's rarely one "perfect" decision. Life is dynamic, and so are you. The goal isn't to make flawless choices but to make authentic ones that honor who you are becoming and create space for your continued growth.

I invite you to try the B-R-A-I-N method with a decision you're currently facing, whether big or small. Trust the process, trust your wisdom, and notice what emerges. You might be surprised by the clarity that's been waiting for you all along.
